Governance & Accountability
Strengthening democratic institutions, anti-corruption mechanisms, and civic oversight systems across Nigeria’s federal, state and local government structures. CHF’s governance research focuses on building institutional capacity, improving transparency, and enabling citizen participation in government decision-making processes.
Key activities include parliamentary oversight assessments, local government accountability mapping, and evidence synthesis for governance reform legislation.
In a rural community in Nigeria, a mother walks several kilometres to access healthcare for her children. The local clinic is understaffed, medicines are scarce, and community concerns often go unheard. Similar challenges exist across the country; in schools lacking learning materials, communities waiting for clean water, and citizens seeking accountability for public resources.
Too often, policies are designed without fully understanding the realities of the people they are meant to serve. Yet effective governance begins by listening.
Governance and accountability are ultimately about people. They ensure that citizens’ voices are reflected in decisions that affect their lives. When governments engage with communities and respond to their needs, policies become more relevant, inclusive, and impactful.
This is why evidence-based governance matters. By gathering insights from citizens, civil society, local leaders, and public institutions, policymakers can better identify challenges, measure progress, and design effective reforms. Community experiences provide valuable evidence for practical and sustainable solutions.
For ordinary Nigerians, accountable governance can mean better schools, accessible healthcare, improved infrastructure, and public services that work. It also means greater transparency and responsible management of public resources.
At CHF, governance research is guided by the belief that those closest to the challenges are often closest to the solutions. Through parliamentary oversight assessments, local government accountability mapping, policy analysis, and community engagement, CHF helps bridge the gap between citizens and decision-makers. By amplifying local voices and translating evidence into action, the organisation supports policies that are responsive, accountable, and grounded in everyday realities.
When communities are heard, governments make better decisions. And when policies reflect people’s needs, development becomes more effective and sustainable.
